TWENTY

Tossing the lines, I started the Baia’s engines and motored us out of the harbor. Ange sat at the topside dinette with our laptop cracked open in front of her, watching a GPS image of the tracker I’d attached to Vito’s getaway car.

“He’s driving over Shark Channel,” she said.

I nodded and accelerated us out through the opening in the bight. I’d called Jack on our rushed drive across the island to the marina. Of course, my old friend had offered to come with us and lend a hand.

“Right now I need you to watch over Scarlett and Atticus. He all right? I didn’t have time to get a good look at him.”

“He’s fine. He’s a Dodge too, after all.”

I’d thanked him after he’d said they were on the way to his house just down the street from mine, and we’d ended the call.

Chugging past the city, I stretched the Baia’s legs to the max, gunning around the island and flying northeast on the Atlantic side. I quickly had us up on plane and cruising at her max speed of fifty knots. I wasn’t concerned about burning too much fuel. I had both tanks topped off and a small window to catch Brier before he slipped through our fingers yet again.

When we blurred past the dark silhouettes of the Saddlebunch Keys, Ange perked up. “He’s pulling into a short driveway on Summerland,” she said. Sliding her fingers over the touchpad, she zoomed in on the map and leaned forward. “He’s stopping, Logan. At a waterfront house off Niles Road.”

I leaned over and glanced at the screen. “That’s the area Harper was talking about. Where those rental houses were.”

Ange nodded. She popped open another internet browser and swiftly discovered the address for the house. I pulled out my phone and placed a quick call to Maddox.

I gave him the address just as he answered, practically yelling over the roar of the twin inboard engines.

“Roger that. What’s your pos?”

“Half a mile south of Sugarloaf.” I didn’t need to check my digital chart to add, “We’re ten minutes out.”

Maddox relayed the address to men beside him, then said, “Ten minutes is a long time with a man of Nathan Brier’s experience.”

“I know. But if you and the police move in right now, it might spook him out into the Gulf. We’re almost there. Just make sure he doesn’t escape by land and call in the Guard to have them get a boat over that way. Once we’re there, we’ve got him cornered. Unless that boat of theirs has a rocket strapped to its transom, there’s no way in hell he’s gonna outrun my Baia.”

Maddox paused again. “All right. We’re on the move and we’ll cover the road. Ten minutes, Dodge. I don’t hear from you by then, and we’re moving in.”

“Copy that.”

I hung up and kept my eyes glued forward as we flew northeast along the Lower Keys, then roared up into Niles Channel.

“What’s the plan once we get there?” Ange said, glancing away from the monitor.
